Sparring Gear Requirements

Sparring is an essential part of Taekwondo training at Taekwon Kids, and all ORANGE BELT or HIGHER belt students will be participating in NON-CONTACT SPARRING as a part of our regular program. Therefore ALL STUDENTS higher than ORANGE BELT will need to bring their sparring gear to EVERY CLASS.

Chestguards and groin cups (for boys) are required for RED BELT and HIGHER but will be required during the SPARRING WEEK.

NOTE: The competition sparring team gear sets differ from the regular class gear shown on this page.

FAQ:

Why do we need protection when the sparring will be non-contact?
The safety of our students is our top priority, and even during non-contact sparring sessions, accidents occur, and protection is a must for all students.

Do I need to wear the gear to every class?

No. But you are required to bring them to every class. We will use them often and there will be time to put them on during the class.

Can we purchase the gear from another shop, like Amazon?

Yes. You can purchase them anywhere if they are the same type. We can assure you that our prices are competitive, and it would be so much more convenient to buy from us.

Can we borrow the gear during classes?

No. Our loaner sparring gear has been sold or thrown out, and we no longer keep them. You must purchase and bring your own sparring gear to every class.

Can I use the sparring gear that I already have?

Yes. If you have any sparring gear designed for Taekwondo, then you do not need to purchase new ones.

Why are we teaching sparring in regular classes?

The partner drills, especially sparring, teach our students essential life skills and understanding of real-life application of Taekwondo techniques. Working with one another, they learn to focus, respect, and understand social interactions, some of the most important skills we want to teach our students.

What types of gear are required?

For regular students NOT in the competition sparring team, please purchase sleeve-type forearm guards and shin-instep guards made out of cloth (as shown in the photos). Guards made out of foam with velcro straps should not be purchased by regular students, for they take longer to put on. However, if you are already in the competition sparring team, you don’t need to buy additional gear.
